The Firefly Witch

Globe

Dr. Tanna Tully is a professor of parapsychology and, as Lady Firefly, a third-degree Wiccan priestess. Blind since birth, she can see at night in the presence of fireflies, and is dedicated to helping any in need. With her newspaperman husband Ry, she fights the small battles against prejudice and mistrust, as well as bigger ones that involve magic, otherworldly dangers, and life or death.

Origin of the Firefly Witch

The idea for the Firefly Witch occurred to me during college; in fact, the term “Firefly Witch” was the first thing that codified, followed by her red hair and blindness. Then I had to decide how to write about her. I’d just read Pale Kings and Princes, my first exposure to Robert B. Parker’s “Spenser” novels, and Dashiell Hammett’s The Thin Man around this time. I realized I’d found my template: I would create an equal partner for Tanna, someone who could match her intellect and courage, and function as the reader’s way into Tanna’s arcane world. I chose to write in his voice, just as Conan Doyle had done with Watson.
